Best Waterfalls & Forts Near Chitrakoot

Chitrakoot Darshan TeamUpdated July 20267 min read

Everyone comes to Chitrakoot for the temples. Far fewer realise it sits in the forested Vindhya hills — a landscape of thundering waterfalls, ancient clifftop forts and wild rivers. For a weekend traveller from Prayagraj, Kanpur, Lucknow or Delhi, that makes Chitrakoot a rare two-in-one: a pilgrimage and a proper nature escape.

Quick answer

The best nature near Chitrakoot: Brihaspati Kund (the 400-ft "Niagara of India", ~75 km), Kalinjar Fort (a 9th-century hill-fort, ~88 km), Marpha Falls (~4 km from Gupt Godavari), Shabri Falls, Ganeshbagh ("mini-Khajuraho") and Panna's tiger reserve. Waterfalls peak August–October.

2-day Vindhya nature & falls weekend

1. Brihaspati Kund — the "Niagara of India"

About 75 km from Chitrakoot near Panna, Brihaspati Kund is the showstopper: a roughly 400-foot waterfall on the Ken river, plunging into a wide rock gorge framed by forest. It's at its most powerful during and just after the monsoon. Bring good shoes — the approach rewards a short scramble with an unforgettable view.

2. Kalinjar Fort — a Chandela hill-fortress

Roughly 88 km away, Kalinjar Fort crowns a Vindhya hill over 1,200 feet high. Built by the Chandela kings in the 9th century, it holds rock-cut shrines to Shiva, Ganesha and Hanuman, ancient inscriptions, and enormous ramparts that have withstood centuries of sieges. The views across the Bundelkhand plains at sunset are extraordinary — history and nature in one stop.

3. Marpha Falls — the hidden one

Just 4 km from Gupt Godavari, Marpha is an easy add-on to the sacred circuit: a forest waterfall with the Jal Mochan Sarovar, a Balaji temple and the ruins of a Chandel-era fort. Peaceful, green and far less visited.

4. Shabri Falls & the forest streams

Near Chitrakoot Dham, Shabri Falls sheets over black rock deep in the forest — a serene, lesser-known spot named for Shabari of the Ramayana. Lovely in the post-monsoon months.

5. Ganeshbagh — the "mini-Khajuraho"

On the Karwi–Devangana road, Ganeshbagh is a hidden gem: an intricately carved temple with a seven-storey stepwell (baoli), built as a summer retreat by a Peshwa noble. Its sculpture has earned it the nickname "mini-Khajuraho" — perfect for heritage lovers.

6. Panna, the Ken river & Khajuraho

Push a little further and the weekend becomes a circuit: Panna Tiger Reserve and the jade-green Ken river gorge for wildlife and boat safaris, and the UNESCO Khajuraho temples (~175 km) for world-class heritage. This is the classic route for international visitors flying into Khajuraho.
